My name is Mark Goolsby. I reside in Lincolnwood IL, outside Chicago. I am a self taught artist. My preferred medium is acrylic paint on canvas. The basement of my home is my studio. The location and isolation provides the privacy I require for my work.
The abstract arts are my chosen style. My creative approach to the canvas is mainly through intuition. I like to keep it simple with the tools and color tones as I use basic brush and acrylic primary colors. I mix my own colors from the four basic color groups. I like to work with non-object formats as much as I can with the exception of basic geometrical shapes here and there. Simple pure abstraction is my highest goal. When I begin I have no idea or vision in mind as I approach a blank canvas. This is the most difficult time for me. I know that the basic tools of brush, paint and color have the potential of expressing a beautiful and unique abstract image. Even as I build a body of work, each new approach to the canvas stirs up feelings of doubt and uncertainty. So I simply begin each new canvas as a beginner and apply paint to the canvas. Color blending and balance is my intuitive blueprint. I'm working to find the ideal relationship between color and form. I am at my best when I paint fast and trust in the flow of the brushstroke and the color blends. I will work on a painting for many hours at a time hoping at any minute I will discover that dynamic combination that will complete the painting so that I will be free of that particular canvas. This process may take days, weeks or longer until I am satisfied with the outcome. At that point I apply to the painting a medium gloss finish to enrich the image.
